What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so it's surfaced as the direct answer by answer engines — Google featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answer engines — instead of one link among many.
An "answer engine" is anything that responds to a question with a single, direct answer rather than a list of links: a Google featured snippet, a voice assistant reading one result aloud, or a generative engine like ChatGPT or Perplexity. AEO is the work of making your content the answer it chooses.
AEO, GEO and SEO — how they fit
The terms sit on a spectrum, and the edges blur:
- SEO targets ranked links on a results page.
- AEO targets the direct-answer slot — historically featured snippets and voice, now increasingly AI answers too.
- GEO specifically targets the answers of generative AI engines and how they name and cite brands.
In practice, AEO and GEO are often used interchangeably in 2026. AEO is the older, broader umbrella; GEO is the sharper, generative-AI-specific case. If you optimize well for one, you usually help the other. For the difference between the answer layer and the classic results page, see GEO vs SEO.
What actually helps AEO
- Ask the question, then answer it. Use the buyer's real question as a heading, and put a tight, self-contained answer in the first sentence beneath it.
- Lead, don't bury. Answer engines lift the clearest passage. If the answer is in paragraph six, it loses to a competitor who put it first.
- Structure for extraction. Short paragraphs, clear lists, and FAQ or how-to structured data help an engine identify and reuse the answer.
- Earn trust around the claim. Corroboration, sources and a clearly defined brand entity make an engine more willing to quote you.
AEO rewards the site that answers the question fastest and most cleanly — not the one that writes the most words around it.
How to know if it's working
The same way you'd measure any answer layer: take your buyers' real questions, run them across the engines that answer, and record whether your answer is the one surfaced — or a competitor's. Track it over time and you have an AEO/GEO scorecard instead of a hunch.
Common questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. AEO grew up around direct answers like Google featured snippets and voice assistants; GEO specifically targets generative AI engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. In 2026 many practitioners treat them as the same discipline.
What content helps with AEO?
Question-based headings, a concise answer-first paragraph directly under each question, clear structure, and supporting FAQ or how-to structured data. The goal is to make the single best answer easy for an engine to lift verbatim.
