What are Google AI Overviews?

Short answer

Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results for many queries — synthesizing an answer from multiple web sources and linking to some of them. They evolved from Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE).

For a growing share of searches, the first thing on a Google results page is no longer a blue link — it's an AI-written summary that answers the question directly and cites a few sources. That block is an AI Overview.

Why AI Overviews matter

How AI Overviews are built

Google generates the summary from content across the web, then shows links to some of the sources it used. It's not a simple re-ranking of the top ten results — a page that doesn't rank #1 can still be cited, and a page that ranks #1 can be left out. That's why AI Overviews are part of Generative Engine Optimization, not just classic SEO.

How brands get cited (no guarantees)

There's no button that puts you in an AI Overview. What tends to help is the same answer-first discipline that helps every engine:

  1. Match the intent precisely with a clear, self-contained answer near the top of the page.
  2. Build topical authority so Google trusts you on the subject, not just the single page.
  3. Use structured data so the content is easy to parse and attribute.
  4. Earn corroboration — reviews, references and mentions that reinforce your entity.
Google decides which sources to synthesize and cite, and it changes over time. Anyone promising a guaranteed spot in an AI Overview is promising something they can't control.

AI Overviews are only one engine

Google AI Overviews are Google's answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini are separate engines, each with its own sources and its own idea of who to name. Being cited in Google's Overview tells you nothing about the others — which is exactly why AI-visibility is measured engine by engine, not as a single score.

Common questions

Are AI Overviews the same as ChatGPT or Perplexity?

No. AI Overviews are Google's own AI summary inside Google Search. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini are separate engines with their own sources. Being cited in one does not mean you're cited in the others — which is why visibility is measured engine by engine.

How do I get cited in a Google AI Overview?

There's no guaranteed method. In practice, authoritative, well-structured, answer-first content that clearly matches the query intent — backed by topical authority and structured data — is more likely to be drawn on. Google decides which sources to synthesize, and it changes over time.

What happened to Google SGE?

AI Overviews evolved from Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE), which began as an opt-in Search Labs experiment and was rolled out more broadly as AI Overviews.
